In addition to an admissible GPA, international applicants need to have admissible TOEFL/IELTS scores and must demonstrate funding for the duration of their program.
Admissible level:
Degree or diploma must be comparable
to a U.S. bachelor's from a regionally accredited institution.
GPA:
Admissible GPA's, indicative of strong academic performance, are equivalent
to a "B" average for degree work comparable to a US bachelor's program.
Report scores according to the degree institution's grading system, not
ours (Do not convert to a 4.00 scale). Helpful hints for evaluating
academic records are available on the GWIS Bulletin Board under "evaluations,"
in the Wisconsin Directory of International Institutions and its Supplement,
or occasionally, as a link from the applicant's GWIS data page under "school."
To have the GPA or admissible level determined for you, request a "RUSH" evaluation (G84).
TOEFL (or MELAB) scores:
These scores are required for applicants who have gone to non-English
speaking or bilingual schools (including Puerto Rican schools). Scores
must meet Graduate School admissibility requirements:
| TOEFL: | 550 paper score (580 recommended for fellowship nominees) |
| 213 computer score (237 recommended for fellowship nominees) | |
| 80 Internet Based (92 recommended for fellowship nominees) | |
| IELTS | 6 out of (7 recommended for fellowship nominees) |
| MELAB: | 77 (82 recommended for fellowship nominees) |
If scores are not officially in ISIS you may verify with ETS (See
GWIS
Bulletin Board).
Financially admissible:
A fellowship alone is not enough to produce an I-20 allowing the student
entry to the US. There must be enough support shown for this year (fellowship) and a pledge of support (by program) for the duration of the program. If students do not have their own funding to make up
the difference, departments must be willing to support the student beyond
the fellowship with assistantships or department fellowships that are
large enough to include tuition remission, health insurance, and a stipend
to cover estimated living expenses. See
Admissions, Cost, and Funding for these estimated amounts. Willingness to
accept this responsibility can be indicated on the nomination form by
using the "Award Type" button and selecting Int'l Regular (one year fellowship)
or Int'l Prize (2 years fellowship, 2 years department support).
The Fellowship Office will inform the Admissions Office of international
applicants that are fellowship winners. However, if the student
does not have sufficient funding or sponsorship, the department must include
letters of department support for the duration of the program along with
the recommendation for admissions. Neither the International Regular
nor the International Prize Fellowship is sufficient support for the duration
of the program.
