Fellows are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Awards are for domestic or international Ph.D. candidates in any field. (Capstone students are not eligible). Nominate only those candidates whose academic records and letters are truly superior.
Department makes sure all nominations have an application and the fee is paid in ISIS/GWIS and are admissible. If your nominee does not appear in GWIS by January 25th, please make sure that Cheng Her, 217 Bascom Hall, has a copy of that applicant's application.
Department submits nomination form via the Web January 22nd - February 1st by 3:00 PM.
Department delivers sets of ranked nomination packets to committee chairs by February 5th (do not send original documents; committees do not return materials) by 4:00 PM.
Committee selects and returns results to the Graduate School by February 18th.
Graduate School sends departments Results Lists by February 29th. Graduate School sends departments an offer letter for each winner, a copy of the letter for the department, and a response form for each winner. Also enclosed are copies of Privileges & Responsibilities Information and copies of Council of Graduate Schools Resolution.
Department combines Graduate School documents with departmental materials and mails to the winners.
Winners respond to department by April 15th.
April 16th - April 23rd Departments submit acceptances electronically.
Department withdraws candidates who are not coming. Department must notify the Fellowship office of any withdrawals.
Graduate School sends letters to winners who accepted the fellowship (copy to department file). This packet includes:
- Confirmation letter
- Information for Fellows
Graduate School payrolls fellows, remits non-resident tuition and pays resident tuition and fees. Both academic and annual awards begin in the Fall term.
Department distributes benefits packet and informs department payroll person of fellowship recipients.
DEADLINES
Friday, February 1st, 2008: Electronic Nomination Forms
are due in the Graduate Academic Services Office (217 Bascom Hall) by
3:00 PM.
Tuesday, February 5th, 2008: Nomination materials are
due in the office of the Divisional Fellowships Committee Chair. Names
and addresses of chairs appear in divisional instructions.
LATE NOMINATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
ELIGIBILITY
All departments may nominate Incoming Graduate Students with an ultimate career goal of PhD, DMA or MFA. (students intending to pursue a Master's degree only are not eligible.)
Beginning Level
Students Eligible For Nomination:
These are students beginning graduate work at UW-Madison in January,
June or September 2008.
These include:
- new students for that term
- transfer students from another institution
began here as new or transfer graduate students before January 2008 (i.e. students who began graduate school in Fall 2007 are not eligible), or
began in another UW-Madison department before that date (these students are either currently enrolled or reentry), or
will begin grad study here in January, 2009. Submit these in next year's competition.
Capstone students
Students intending to pursue a Master's degree only are not eligible.
Two-year Recruitment Fellowship in Beginning Level
The fellowship guarantees a year of funding for the student's first year. For prospective
doctoral students, the fellowships will guarantee a second year of support, when the student
becomes a dissertator. An eligible student may receive a maximum of two years of recruitment funding.
Dissertator Level
There will be no Social Science dissertator fellowships this year.

Social Science Beginning Level Nominations:
Complete and submit the Nomination Form electronically.
For each nominee, make three (3) packets, each containing A-D in order and staple. One (1) for committee members and one (1) for file

Student's Statement of Reasons for Graduate Study
Transcripts
Create a set of two (2) packets. Organize the sets in ranked order.
