A Message from Dean Martin Cadwallader

We all relate to the world and each other through our personal experiences. My experience in the classroom, as student and teacher, serves as my template for what diversity in education can do. A classroom is more challenging and exciting when ideas are shared by students and faculty from many backgrounds. In research, different viewpoints affect not only what we research, but how we conduct it. Whether in the classroom or research lab, an inclusive graduate community expands opportunities to those not traditionally represented in higher education and helps to broaden the perspective of all.

Diversity is not just something we talk about here at the Graduate School. We are committed to it. We devote staff and resources to help departments recruit talented underrepresented students, staff, and faculty to their programs and departments. We provide financial support to eligible students as Advanced Opportunity Fellowships. We created and support the Multicultural Graduate Network program to encourage all targeted underrepresented graduate students to connect with each other, our campus and Madison's communities.

One of my top priorities as Dean of the Graduate School is to increase the number of underrepresented students, staff, and faculty at UW-Madison. We want to foster a campus climate in which all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or economic background, are treated with respect and inspired to attain their goals.
