Fall 2008 Checklist
What Do I Do Now?
For all new students:
Visit your department office.
As a graduate student your department is central to your campus life. While there, meet the graduate coordinator and your advisor. As graduate programs vary, so does the makeup of the departmental offices. Although the departmental office is there to assist you, it is your responsibility to be aware of graduate policies and deadlines.
Attend your department orientation activity, if applicable.
Most departments offer orientation activities to help you acclimate to the department and campus.
If you haven't already done so, enroll for classes!
Web enrollment is available through My UW-Madison. You will need your NetID and password to access My UW-Madison. If you do not have a NetID, click on the ACTIVATE NETID button from the My UW Madison log on screen. Your password is the one you use to check WiscWorld email. If you are unsure about your NetID and password, contact the DoIT Help Desk at (608)264-4357.
Fall 2008 Timetables
(schedule of classes) are available online only.
Pay your tuition/fees.
Check your student account invoice for amount due and payment deadlines. Pay your fees and tuition, if applicable, at the Bursar's Office, 21 N. Park Street, Suite 7101. If you do not receive an invoice, contact the the Bursar's Office. Failure to receive an invoice will not be accepted as a reason for failure to comply with payment deadlines.
Get your UW Photo ID card.
Get your UW ID card photo taken at Union South. You must bring identification, such as a valid driver's license.
Prerequisite: You must be enrolled
Setting your campus email address
Students can no longer set a “preferred email address.” The preferred address will default to their WiscMail address (e.g. bbadger@wisc.edu). Other email addresses can be added in My UW-Madison at https://login.wisc.edu/?appurl=my.wisc.edu/portal. Select the Student Center module. To update your address before you enroll contact the Graduate Admissions Office at 262-2433.
Update Your Contact Information
Login to My UW-Madison. Open the Student Center module (located in My Home, Academic, and Finances tabs). Locate the “Personal Information” section towards the bottom of Student Center. Click on the address or phone number you want to change and make the updates. To update your address before you enroll, contact the Graduate Admissions Office at 262-2433.
Attend the New Student Resource Fair and Welcome Events.
The Resource Fair brings together service representatives from over forty campus resources under one roof. Find information about health insurance, computer services, the GSC, and much more.
Pick up your free Madison Metro bus pass.
If you are an enrolled UW-Madison student, you may be eligible for a bus pass at no charge through the ASM Bus Pass program. Passes are available at the Memorial Union Annex (2nd floor) or the Union South lobby beginning Monday, August 25. Both locations will be open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm during the first two weeks of classes. Please note that you must have a UW Photo ID and be registered for Fall 2008 classes before you can pick up your pass. Visit the Madison Metro Web site for more information on their services.
