Program Description:
The Burroughs Wellcome has announced a call for nominations for the Career Awards for Medical Sciences (CAMS). The program supports the physician scientist (M.D., D.V.M., D.D.S., Pharm.D. or equivalent clinical degree) supporting the last year(s) of postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. The award provides $700,000 over five years.
Eligibility:
- Candidates must hold an M.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., Pharm.D., or equivalent clinical degree.
- Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease oriented, translational, or molecular, genetic, or pharmacological epidemiology research. Proposals that are in the area of epidemiology should contact BWF to determine the eligibility of the proposal. Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.
- During the award period, at least 75 percent of the awardee’s time must be devoted to research-related activities.
- The postdoctoral portion of the fellowship must last a minimum of one year.

Internal Competition Instructions:
UW-Madison may nominate up to 5 applicants.
Nomination Instructions - Please e-mail the name, full contact information, and residency status of the departmental nominee to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu by September 1. We request that no more than one nomination come from any single department for this or any internal competition. An ad hoc committee will be convened and select the final candidates.
Application Instructions - The following information should be submitted for final review: Title page with applicant information, Scientific Abstract (1 page limit), Research Plan (6 page limit), CV, Faculty Sponsor Letter, Graduate Advisor Letter and Statements of Collaboration (optional). 5 copies of the application should be delivered to the Graduate School, 333 Bascom Hall by 4:30 on Wednesday, September 10.
Applications from nominees selected in the internal competition must be submitted electronically through proposalCENTRAL, and hard copies of the signature form must be sent to BWF by the October 1 deadline.
