| DATE: | January 5, 2005 |
| TO: | Deans, Directors, Department Chairs, College/School Research Administrators |
| FROM: | Jane Sherwood, The Graduate School |
| SUBJECT: | Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Med into Grad Initiative |
Deadlines: Thursday, April 20, 2005 for email notices of intent to submit proposal to both UW-Madison and HHMI; Wednesday, June 15, 4:00 p.m. for internal competition application; Thursday, September 8, 2005, 1:00 p.m. for full proposal to HHMI
The goal of this program is to improve the understanding of medicine and pathobiology by scientists conducting biomedical research. Grants will be used to modify existing graduate training or initiate new programs to develop Ph.D researchers who understand pathophysiology and are committed to working at the interface of basic and clinical research.
Up to $10 million in grants to as many as 10 institutions will be awarded. Awards will range from $400,000 to $1 million, allocated over four years. No further competition is expected for at least four years if grants totaling $10 million are awarded.
UW–Madison may submit only two proposals, and no more than one program will be funded at any one institution. Therefore, we will convene an ad hoc committee to review the applications internally and to select the projects to be forwarded to the agency.
More detailed information about this program is also available on the HHMI web site. http://www.hhmi.org/grants/gcs
