The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has announced the 2006 HHMI Professors competition. The goal of this program is to stimulate and support accomplished research scientists (primarily tenured faculty) to energize undergraduate education and to offer students new opportunities to learn modern biology in laboratory settings similar to those of research scientists. Faculty in the biological, biochemical, bioinformatics, and biomedical sciences are eligible to apply as well as faculty in physics, chemistry, and engineering whose work is in the biomedical sciences.
Awards of $1 million each will be provided over a four-year period to up to 20 individuals from 100 invited institutions. Each institution may nominate only two candidates for this award. Therefore, we will convene an ad hoc committee to review the applications internally and to select the nominees to be forwarded to the agency.
Full eligibility criteria, proposal requirements, and evaluation criteria are on the HHMI web site. http://www.hhmi.org/grants/individuals/professors.html
Department chairs should submit the name of the nominee from their department to the Graduate School for this limited competition. Send an email message to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu by Wednesday, March 30, 2005 to inform us of the intention to submit a proposal for internal review.
Send five copies of your proposal for the internal review to the Graduate School Dean's Office, 333 Bascom Hall by Wednesday, April 13, 4:00 p.m. Your proposal should include: a 2-4 page program description of your project vision and objectives, targeted groups, program activities, and expected outcomes; summary of your research accomplishments; and summary of your accomplishments in undergraduate education. Also include a curriculum vitae with your proposal.
For those applicants selected, complete proposals must be submitted using the HHMI web-based system, and a hard copy also must be sent to HHMI. HHMI will send instructions to the nominees for using the on-line HHMI Competition System. The HHMI deadline for both the electronic submission and the hard copy is Wednesday, September 7, 2005.
