The National Science Foundation has issued the Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) program announcement. This program supports fellowships and associated training that enable graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to acquire additional skills that prepare them for professional and scientific careers in the 21st century while at the same time improving STEM content and teaching at the K-12 level. The program solicitation may be found at the following NSF web site:
http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf05553
This program provides up to $660,000 funding per year for up to three years (track 1, initial track for new projects) or up to $2 million total over five years (track 2, follow on track for past or current projects).
Limit on Number of Proposals: UW-Madison may submit only one proposal as the lead institution. The Graduate School will convene an ad hoc committee to conduct an internal review of the applications and to select the project to be forwarded to NSF. Please send an email message stating your intention to submit a pre-proposal to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu by Wednesday, March 9.
Pre-proposals should include information about the following: 1) overview of the proposed project; 2) PI and list of faculty participants, including their disciplines/departments and institutional affiliation; 3) K-12 school district participants and their affiliation; and 4) disciplines to be covered by GK-12 teachers and GK-12 fellows. In your project overview, please consider the review criteria in the NSF Proposal Review Information (Section VI, A) of the NSF Program Solicitation).
Five copies of the 3-4 page project description should be submitted to the Graduate School Dean's Office, 333 Bascom Hall, by Wednesday, March 16, 2005, 4:00 p.m. Please include PI and Co-PI names and departments as well as PI contact information.
For those projects selected, complete proposals must be submitted by FastLane. Information about campus procedures for FastLane is posted on the RSP Web site. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 263-7242, or Petra Schroeder at 265-4868, or email at gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu.
