| SUBJECT: | NSF-Instrumentation for Materials Research - Major Instrumentation Projects (IMR-MIP) |
Deadlines: Wednesday, November 17, 2004, 12:00 noon for email notice of intent to submit proposal; Wednesday, December 1, 2004, 12:00 noon for internal competition application
The IMR-MIP program in the Division of Materials Research provides support for the design and construction of major instruments costing more than $2 million at major US facilities. The program also supports the development of detailed conceptual and engineering design for new tools for materials preparation or characterization at major national facilities. Mid-scale instruments for materials research may include but are not limited to, for example, neutron beam lines, synchrotron beam lines, and high field magnets, as well as development of detectors and preparation environments necessary to support materials research. The program supports two types of awards: Conceptual and Engineering design (CED) awards and Construction (CNST) awards. Cost sharing is not required. The solicitation contains information that deviates from the standard NSF Grant Proposal Guide proposal preparation guidelines. See the full text of this solicitation on the NSF IMR-MIP web site.
The number of applications UW–Madison may submit is limited to one. For this reason we will convene an ad hoc committee to review the applications and to select the project to be forwarded to NSF.
Please send an email message to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu by Wednesday, November 17, 12:00 noon, to inform us of your intention to submit a proposal. Include in your email message the names and departments of the PI and Co-PI, a brief (one sentence) description of your proposal.
Send five copies of a 2-4 page description of the proposed project, its objectives, key features, and impacts, and the faculty/staff programs involved to the Graduate School Dean's Office, 333 Bascom Hall by Wednesday, December 1, 2004, 12:00 noon.
For the project selected, the complete proposal must be submitted to NSF using FastLane. The NSF deadline is Monday, January 24, 2005. Information about campus procedures for submitting proposals through the FastLane system is posted on the RSP Web site.
