Program description
The Physics Frontiers Centers (PFC) program aims to foster major breakthroughs at the intellectual frontiers of physics through supporting activities of collective efforts of larger groups of scientists. The program will support activities in all sub-fields of physics as well as interdisciplinary projects at the interface between physics and other disciplines including biology, mathematics, and emerging physics disciplines. Successful PFC proposals will demonstrate 1) the potential for a profound advance in physics; 2) creative, substantive activities aimed at enhancing education, diversity, and public outreach; 3) potential for broader impacts such as benefits to society; and 4) will justify a center- or institute-like approach.
NSF program solicitation [NSF 07-567]: http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf07567
Eligibility
UW-Madison may submit only two pre-proposals. Full proposals may be submitted to NSF by invitation only. The Graduate School will convene an ad hoc committee to review the pre-proposals internally and select the projects to be forwarded to NSF.
How to send the notice of intent to apply
Send an email message to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu with the full contact information for the PI, the names and departments of the Co-PIs, and a 1-2 sentence description of your proposed project.
How to apply for the internal competition or internal review
Project descriptions of 2-3 pages in length should include information about the following: scientific thrusts, educational, outreach and diversity activities, and broader impacts. A budget is not required for the internal competition. Five copies of the project description should be submitted to the Graduate School Dean's Office, 333 Bascom Hall, by Monday, July 9, 12:00 p.m. Include a cover sheet with complete contact information for the PI, and names and departments of the Co-PIs.
For the project selected, the complete preliminary proposal must be submitted using FastLane (see the campus procedure posted on the RSP Web site).
