Deadlines: Nominations due Friday, February 2, 2007; Internal applications due Wednesday, February 7, 2007
Information about David and Lucile Packard fellowships for science and engineering is available on the Packard Foundation web site (click here). The program provides for individual grants of $625,000 distributed over five years. UW-Madison may nominate two candidates for the award. Candidates must be faculty members in the first three years of their faculty careers whose initial faculty appointments began no earlier than May 31, 2004 and no later than May 31, 2007.
The Fellowship provides support for researchers in disciplines including physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered. Packard does not fund research in certain areas of research including clinical research, research associated with the design and construction of large national facilities, and applied research of direct relevance to national security. It is the intent of the Foundation to support innovative individual research that involves the Fellows, their students, and junior colleagues rather than large-scale, ongoing research programs. Please send the name, department, and full contact information for your nominee to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu by February 2, 2007. We request that any single department submit no more than one internal nomination for limited competitions.
Nominees should submit five copies of the application materials detailed below to the Graduate School, Room 333 Bascom Hall, no later than 12:00 pm on Wednesday, February 7, 2007. An ad hoc committee will be convened to review applications and select the final candidates.
Materials required for UW internal review include the following: complete contact information, departmental and institutional affiliation(s), disciplinary field(s), educational background, professional positions held, honors and awards, current external research support, publications, and a research statement (not to exceed 1400 words--two pages of text, or three pages with relevant figures or images) describing why the candidate's research is important, outline of general goals for the next five years, a statment indicating generally how the research funds will be used, and a letter from the department chair. Outside letters of reference are not required for the internal competition.
The Packard Foundation has an on-line system for submitting the nomination materials. Candidates selected in the internal competition will be provided with access information regarding the electronic submission of their applications.
The Packard deadline for submitting nominations from the university is March 15 and the deadline for submitting applications is April 17. If you have questions, contact Jane Sherwood (263-7274) or Petra Schroeder (265-4868) or send an email message to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu.
