UW-Madison has been invited to nominate one candidate for the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences. The program supports young investigators of outstanding promise relevant to the advancement of human health. Clinically-oriented and basic research scientists are welcome to apply. The award provides $60,000 annually for a period of four years.
Eligibility for the Pew Scholars award is restricted to assistant professors who will not have held full-time faculty appointments for more than three years as of July 1, 2007. Individuals who meet the eligibility criteria but are considered sufficiently advanced in their careers to warrant appointment at the associate professor level will not be considered eligible. In addition, scholars may not simultaneously be supported by a similar privately funded scholar award (such as Beckman, Burroughs-Wellcome, Howard Hughes, Packard, Searle, Shaw, etc.) for the first two years of the Pew Scholarship.

We request that any single department submit no more than one internal nomination for any limited competition. To nominate a candidate, email the name, department, and the complete contact information of the nominee to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu by September 6, 2006.
Four copies of the nomination packets are due in the Graduate School, 333 Bascom Hall, by
12 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. Nomination packets should include:
1) a one page abstract of proposed research,
2) self-assessment description of most significant research contribution to date, highlighting creativity and risk-taking,
3) description of the proposed research
(maximum length of five double-spaced pages, plus up to five pages of figures
and references),
4) a curriculum vitae including pertinent publications list, and
5) letter of nomination from the department
or program chair.
The budget, outside letters of recommendation, and reprints are not required for the internal competition.
An ad hoc faculty committee will be convened to review the applications and select the UW-Madison nominee to be forwarded to the Pew competition.
The successful UW-Madison nominee must prepare an on-line application form for submission to the Pew Scholars Program. In addition, the nominee will need to solicit reference letters from their thesis advisor, their post-doc advisor(s) and from an individual in their field who is not a current collaborator, not at the UW, and not a former advisor. The deadline for submission of all application materials to the Pew Scholars Program is November 1, 2006.
