I am pleased to announce this year’s Vilas Associate competition. The Vilas Trustees have agreed to provide support during fiscal years 2008-09 and 2009-10. The winners in this competition receive up to two-ninths of research salary support during summer 2008 and summer 2009, and a $12,500 flexible research fund each fiscal year. All tenure-track assistant professors and tenured faculty within 20 years of their tenure date are eligible to apply for this award. Faculty paid on an annual basis are not eligible for the summer salary support but are eligible to receive the flexible fund portion of this award.
Please see the attached fact sheet for more information on the Vilas Associate program and application instructions.
This year’s deadline is November 9, 2007.
VILAS ASSOCIATES PROGRAM
Thanks to the generosity of the Vilas Trustees, the Vilas Associates program
will provide research support during fiscal years 2008-2009 and 2009-2010.
This competition is open to tenure-track and tenured faculty, from the assistant
professor level to professors within 20 years of their tenure date. Winners
receive up to two-ninths of research salary support (including the associated
fringe costs) for both summers 2008 and 2009, as well as a $12,500 flexible
research fund in each of the two fiscal years. Faculty paid on an annual
basis are not eligible for the summer salary support but are eligible for
the flexible fund portion of this award.
Departments or programs with fewer than 15 faculty members may nominate one individual. Departments or programs with 15 or more faculty may nominate up to two individuals.
Each nomination should include three elements; (1) a department or program letter of nomination; (2) a research proposal written by the candidate; and (3) the candidate’s full CV.
The letter of nomination should be brief and limited to an articulation of the candidate’s division, the process by which the candidate was chosen, and a description of the candidate’s research area not to exceed 300 words.
The research proposal should describe a single project relevant to the candidate’s field of study that can be accomplished in the two-year period of the award. The proposed project can be part of a larger study, but it will be important for the candidate to specify the work to be done during the period of the Vilas Associates award. This proposal cannot exceed four double-spaced pages.
Please be aware of the following contingencies: Faculty receiving summer salary from the Vilas Associates Program cannot receive summer support simultaneously from the Graduate School Research Committee; therefore, any summer support awarded by the committee for summers 2008 or 2009 would be withdrawn to permit acceptance of the Vilas Associates award, The terms of the Vilas Associates Program stipulate that the periods for which the Vilas grants are awarded are not negotiable. The maximum stipend for summer 2008 has been capped by the trustees at $12,750 per month.
The original and four copies (five total) of the nomination should be sent to the attention of the Vilas Associates Competition Committee in 317 Bascom Hall by November 9, 2007. Questions should be posed to Rebecca Patterson (2-8387) or to the associate dean appropriate to your division (2-1044).
